The village and its setting
Tobaccoville sits mostly in northern Forsyth County, with small portions in Stokes County, about 10 miles north-northwest of downtown Winston-Salem in a straight line. It incorporated as a village in 1991, partly to resist annexation by King. The 2020 Census counted 2,578 residents, and about 90% of them live in areas the Census classes as rural. R.J. Reynolds' large manufacturing plant is the village's best-known landmark, along with the Old Richmond Schoolhouse and Gymnasium, Village Park, Doral Drive, Tobaccoville Road and the Little Yadkin River crossing at Donnaha.
The oldest houses in this part of the county
The median Tobaccoville home was built in 1980, and about half were built before then, which gives the village the oldest housing stock among the nearby Forsyth towns. Older homes are more likely to have original supply and drain piping, fixtures that have been patched more than once, and water heaters tucked into crawl spaces or utility rooms that weren't sized for today's units. Those are the jobs a plumber here tends to see.
Water: public in some places, wells in others
One of the Village's early projects was installing fire hydrants, and parts of Tobaccoville are on Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities water. That water is soft and chlorine-treated, and the utility's 2025 report lists no violations. Much of the village is rural, though, and many homes use private wells. New wells need a construction permit from Forsyth County Environmental Health, and the fee covers the first water sample.
Sewer is similar. Where the utility's sewer exists, homes connect to it; many rural homes are not on municipal sewer and use a private onsite wastewater system.
Permits
Tobaccoville is one of the smaller municipalities served by the joint Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Inspections Division, so plumbing permits for the Forsyth side go through that office (336-727-2624). Homes on utility water with a testable backflow assembly fall under the utility's cross-connection program.
How it differs from Winston-Salem, and what to tell us
A Winston-Salem plumbing call usually starts with city water and city sewer. In Tobaccoville, the first questions are whether the house has a well, whether it is on sewer, and how old the piping is. Piedmont Natural Gas covers both Forsyth and Stokes counties, but rural roads may not have gas mains. If you smell gas, get out of the house and call 911 or Piedmont from outside.
When you call the number on this page, let us know if you are on a well and what is happening, such as no water, low pressure, a leak or a backup. You will be connected with an independent plumber who works in Tobaccoville and who sets the price with you.
