Most routine plumbing repairs in Winston-Salem cost a few hundred dollars: This Old House's survey of local quotes put the typical job at $94 to $312. HomeGuide's 2026 figures put plumber labor at $45 to $150 an hour, usually with a $50 to $200 service call fee on top, while water heaters, main sewer lines and after-hours visits can push a bill well past $1,000.

Typical ranges from the sources cited below, not a quote. Your plumber will price the actual job.
What makes up a plumbing bill?
Almost every invoice combines a service call fee, labor and materials. HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts the service call at $50 to $200, often covering the first hour, and notes that some plumbers bill a full hour even when the fix takes fifteen minutes. Labor runs $45 to $150 an hour, with an average near $75 before trip fees and parts. Master plumbers sit at the upper end.
Many Winston-Salem shops quote routine work as a flat price per task instead of by the hour. HomeGuide lists a common flat fee of $200 to $250 for standard services or the first hour. A flat price is predictable, but ask what it covers. Does it include parts? What happens if the plumber finds a corroded valve behind the one you called about?
Distance matters too. HomeGuide describes travel charges of $1 to $2 per mile after the first 10 miles, which can add up if a plumber based in the city drives out to a farmhouse in Davie or Rowan County. Hiring someone who already works near you, for example a plumber who covers the Mocksville area, can keep that line off the bill.
What are local homeowners actually paying?
This Old House collected quotes from Winston-Salem plumbers and published average prices by job. The data was last updated in February 2024, so treat it as a floor rather than a current price list:
| Job | Winston-Salem average (This Old House, 2024) |
|---|---|
| Toilet repair | $180 |
| Garbage disposal repair | $180 |
| Faucet replacement | $225 |
| Clearing clogs or drain snaking | $270 |
| Leaking pipes | $270 |
| Gas line repair | $361 |
| Water heater repair | $406 |
| Water heater installation | $1,173 |
| Burst pipe | $2,256 |
Those averages line up with HomeGuide's 2026 national ranges in the price calculator on this page. A single clog or a running toilet is usually a modest bill. If the same kitchen line backs up every few months, paying once for a thorough drain cleaning tends to cost less than repeated quick fixes, and a flapper or fill valve swap is typical of the work in toilet repair visits.
How much more is a night or weekend call?
A lot. HomeGuide's emergency plumbing guide lists these hourly ranges, not counting a separate $150 to $250 call-out fee or after-hours surcharge:
- Same day during business hours: $100 to $200 an hour
- Weekday evenings and nights: $120 to $300 an hour
- Weekends: $150 to $350 an hour
- Holidays: $200 to $450 or more an hour
The same guide puts an after-hours toilet or drain clog at $300 to $800 for simple snaking. So the real question at 10 p.m. is whether the problem can be contained until morning. Water you can't shut off, sewage rising in a tub, or a heater pouring onto the floor justifies the premium; a drip under a sink with a working stop valve usually doesn't. Our guide on deciding if it can wait until morning walks through the line, and an after-hours plumber in Winston-Salem is there when it can't.
Why do quotes vary so much around Forsyth County?
The age of the house
Winston-Salem's homes skew older than many Triad suburbs. Census survey data summarized by Point2Homes puts the city's median home at 1986 construction, with about 43 percent built before 1980. Historic neighborhoods such as the West End date largely to 1887 through 1930. In those houses a simple valve change can turn into replacing a length of brittle galvanized pipe, and plumbers price in that risk. When an older house has repeated leaks, ask for a price on replacing the supply piping so you can compare it against piecemeal repairs.
Permits
Plumbing permits in Winston-Salem and unincorporated Forsyth County, plus Bethania, Clemmons, Lewisville, Rural Hall, Tobaccoville and Walkertown, go through the joint Inspections Division (336-727-2624). Its April 2026 fee schedule sets a $75 minimum for any plumbing permit and a $100 flat fee for a water heater changeout permit, electrical included. Failed inspections cost extra: $50 for a second trip and $75 for a third. Most plumbers pull the permit and add it to the invoice. Rowan County runs its own inspections office, and its February 2024 schedule lists $75 for a storage water heater permit and $90 for tankless.
Who owns the pipe
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities keeps a service line inventory and asks customers to report the material of their private line. If yours turns out to be lead or galvanized steel, the utility asks you to wait for its replacement plan and financing announcement rather than paying out of pocket right away. For other leaks on your side, HomeGuide puts water main repair at $400 to $1,500, and a plumber who handles service line repairs can tell you which side of the meter the problem is on.
Wells and rural systems
Some homes outside the city limits draw from private wells. Forsyth County Environmental Health permits and samples them, and about half of Rowan County residents relied on wells as of 2015. HomeGuide prices well pump repair at $500 to $1,000, a cost city customers never see. Homeowners there can find help with well pumps around Salisbury.
What do the bigger jobs run?
HomeGuide's 2026 figures for less routine work:
- Main sewer line repair: $1,880 to $3,700. Before agreeing to that, a camera look inside the sewer at $125 to $500 shows whether the problem is roots, a sag or a break.
- Water heater replacement: $600 to $1,800 for a typical tank, and $1,400 to $5,600 installed for tankless. Our guide on fixing versus replacing a water heater helps you decide which way to go.
- New plumbing pipes: $2,280 to $5,120.
Are there recurring costs people forget?
Backflow testing is the one that surprises new homeowners. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities requires property owners to test and maintain backflow assemblies on cross-connections, with most assemblies tested every year by a WSFC-approved tester and reports filed through BSI Online. Under NC Senate Bill 166, eligible residential irrigation systems without chemical feed now test on a three-year cycle. BSI mails a reminder 30 days before a test is due, so watch for it and book an irrigation backflow test before the deadline.
How do you get a fair price?
- Describe the problem precisely when you call. Photos, the fixture brand and how long it has been happening help the plumber bring the right parts.
- Ask how they bill. Flat rate or hourly, whether the service fee is credited toward the repair, and whether a minimum hour applies.
- Get the total in writing before work starts, including parts, labor and any permit.
- Bundle small jobs. If you are paying a call-out fee anyway, add the slow tub drain to the same visit.
- Book weekday hours for anything that can be contained. The gap between a weekday rate and a holiday rate can be several hundred dollars on one job.
What if you smell gas?
That is a safety call, not a pricing one. Leave the house, then call 911 or Piedmont Natural Gas at 800-752-7504 from outside. Piedmont serves Forsyth and Davie counties and parts of Davidson and Rowan; Lexington runs its own city gas system, so customers there should call 911 or the City of Lexington's gas utility. Once the utility has made the line safe, a plumber who does gas piping repair can fix it.
